Privacy Policy

Clefly is built to need as little of your data as possible. You sign in once with Apple so your progress can be backed up to your own account, and that account is all the app needs. There is no ad network and no tracking. This page explains, in plain language, what the app collects and why.

The short version

• Your learning progress lives on your device and is backed up to your account on our servers, so you can pick up where you left off on any device. The backup is private to you.
• You sign in with Apple. We never see your Apple ID, email address, or password, only an anonymous identifier that Apple gives us.
• The optional Friends feature shows your chosen display name and weekly practice totals to friends you invite, on a small weekly leaderboard.
• If you join a music teacher's studio, that teacher can see your name and avatar, your homework results, and your practice activity such as XP, streaks and when you last practised. Joining always asks your consent first and shows you exactly what will be shared, and leaving the studio stops all sharing.
• We receive usage statistics (for example, "a lesson was completed") on our own analytics service, so we can tell whether Clefly is working. Once you are signed in they carry your account identifier, so they are linked to your account and not anonymous.
• We receive anonymous crash reports so we can fix bugs.
• We never sell data, show ads, or track you across other apps and websites.

Your account and progress backup

Clefly asks you to sign in with Apple when you first use it. The account exists so your progress can be backed up and restored, and it powers the optional Friends and Studio features. Apple gives us an anonymous identifier for your Apple ID; we never see your Apple ID itself, your email address, or your password. We also store the display name and avatar you choose in the app.

Your progress backup is stored on our servers in the Netherlands and contains what describes you as a learner: your skill-tree progress, exercise results, streaks, XP, achievements, and settings. It is used only to restore your progress when you sign in on a device. It is not visible to friends, and outside the specific results described under Studios below, not to teachers either.

You can delete your account, and everything stored with it, inside the app under Profile, Settings. Deleting the account removes your progress backup, your profile, your friendships, and your studio memberships from our servers.

Friends (optional)

If you choose to use the Friends feature, you and the friends you invite can see each other on a small weekly leaderboard.

For Friends we store, on our servers in the Netherlands:

• your weekly practice totals (XP), your practice streak, and your best Lightning-round scores,
• who you are friends with, based on the invites you and your friends accept.

Only people you are friends with can see your display name, avatar, and these numbers. There are no public profiles and no way to search for people. Your friends never see your learning content: which notes you practise or struggle with is part of your private backup and is never shared on the leaderboard.

You can remove a friend at any time. Deleting your account removes your profile, friendships, and all reported numbers from our servers.

Studios (learning with a teacher)

Clefly Studio lets a music teacher assign short exercises to their students. Joining a studio is always your choice: you enter or scan the teacher's invite code, and before anything is shared the app shows you exactly what the teacher will be able to see and asks you to confirm.

If you join a studio, that teacher can see:

• your display name,
• your avatar,
• your results on the homework they assign you: your first score and your best score after redoing it,
• your weekly XP, and your XP history week by week,
• your current streak and your longest streak,
• your best Lightning-round score and your best Lightning streak,
• how many lessons you have completed,
• when you last practised,
• a private label the teacher can write about you, for example a class name or an instrument. The label is the teacher's own note about you, is stored with your studio membership, and is visible only to that studio's teacher.

Notes a teacher writes on your finished homework are visible to you in the app. The teacher cannot see anything else from your account, and other students in the studio cannot see you at all. You can leave a studio at any time in the app, which stops all sharing with that teacher, and a teacher can remove students from their studio.

Usage statistics

To understand whether Clefly actually helps people learn, the app sends usage events to Tidings, our own analytics service, which we run ourselves on our servers. No third-party analytics or advertising SDK is built into the app.

Separately, the app receives crash and performance diagnostics through Apple's MetricKit, described under "Crash and performance reports" below. The events themselves describe how the app is used:

• which screens you open,
• which lessons and practice runs you start, finish, or quit, and how they went, for example accuracy and XP earned,
• settings you change, such as switching instrument or turning reminders on,
• notifications you receive and tap,
• basic technical context such as app version, build, iOS version, and device model.

Once you are signed in, these events carry your Clefly account identifier, so they are linked to your account rather than anonymous. That lets us answer questions like "do people who finish the first unit keep practising", which anonymous counts cannot. Before you sign in, events carry a random identifier generated for that installation. The events never contain your name, your email address, your location, your contacts, or an advertising identifier, and we do not track you across other apps or websites. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with advertisers or data brokers.

Usage events are kept for as long as we need them to understand how the app is used, and are then deleted or reduced to aggregate statistics. Because signed-in events carry your account identifier, we can find yours: email [email protected] and we will delete the usage events belonging to your account.

Website analytics

The clefly.app website (this site, including the invite pages and Clefly Studio) records anonymous usage events — page views and button clicks such as "opened the App Store" — on Tidings, an analytics service we run ourselves. Nothing is shared with third parties. The website sets no cookies for this: events are grouped by a random identifier that lives only for your current browser session and is discarded when you close the tab. These events contain no name, no email address, and no location, and we use them only in aggregate, such as "how many visitors tried the note-reading demo".

Crash and performance reports

The app uses Apple's MetricKit to receive anonymous crash and hang diagnostics. These reports describe what the app was doing when it failed and contain no personal information. Apple only shares them if you have enabled "Share With App Developers" in your device settings.

Camera

If you tap "Scan a QR code" to add a friend or join a studio, the app asks for camera permission and uses the camera only to read the code, live on your device. No photos or video are recorded, stored, or transmitted, and the camera is never used for anything else.

Microphone

Clefly does not record audio and does not use the microphone. If a future version adds an optional feature that listens to your instrument, the sound will be analyzed on your device in real time and never recorded, stored, or transmitted, and this policy will be updated before that feature ships.

Notifications

If you turn on the daily practice reminder, it is scheduled locally on your device by the system and no notification data leaves your device. If you additionally enable friend notifications, we store a push token for your device so our server can notify you when, for example, a friend passes you in the weekly race. You can turn either off at any time in the app or in iOS Settings, and deleting your account removes the push token.

Children

Clefly is suitable for all ages, and collects no more from children than from anyone else: the progress backup and the optional features described above. Clefly uses Sign in with Apple, which Apple restricts to users who meet the minimum age for an Apple ID in their country, or to managed accounts set up by a parent or guardian in a family group.

Your choices

• Deleting the app deletes all locally stored progress. Your backup stays attached to your account so you can restore it later; delete the account to remove it too.
• You can delete your account in the app under Profile, Settings, which removes your progress backup, profile, friendships, and studio memberships from our servers.
• Joining a studio is opt-in, and you can leave one at any time in the app, which stops all sharing with that teacher.
• Usage statistics from a signed-in app carry your account identifier. Email [email protected] and we will delete the usage events belonging to your account.
• You can disable crash sharing system-wide in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security, then Analytics & Improvements.

Changes to this policy

If Clefly's data practices change, we will update this page and change the date at the top before the new practices take effect.
